A rendering of what Crossfit Enhance KMC will look like on the Kirby Medical Center campus in Monticello.
Tue,
11/03/2015 | Steve Hoffman – The push for wellness continues at Kirby Medical
Center. Fresh off the opening of its 1-mile long Wellness Trail, the Monticello
hospital has announced plans to open a CrossFit gym (known as a “box” within
the CrossFit community).
Kirby
has received approval from CrossFit, Inc., and plans to construct a
3,200-square-foot building that will house CrossFit Enhance KMC. It will be
located in a separate building next to the current ambulance garage.
Site
work could begin soon, but the hospital will need a conditional use permit from
the City of Monticello since the CrossFit qualifies as an accessory structure.
CrossFit
Enhance KMC will be open to the public as an extension of health and wellness
services developed by Kirby Medical Center and feature programming developed by
Decatur Memorial Hospital’s “CrossFit Enhance”.
“CrossFit
is universally scalable for all people and the culture of CrossFit is accepting
and accessible to everyone, regardless of experience and ability,” said Steve
Tenhouse, Chief Executive Officer of Kirby Medical Center and a CrossFit Level
I Trainer. “CrossFit offers high intensity, ever-changing workouts that build
endurance, stamina and strength while also building a tight community of
support and camaraderie among the members.”
CrossFit,
Inc. has pledged $21,000 to outfit the gym with equipment traditionally used in
CrossFit workouts, including weights, bars, rowers, pull-up rigs, medicine
balls, dumbbells and kettle balls.
“We are
increasingly grateful for CrossFit’s generosity and Greg Glassman’s (the
founder of CrossFit) promise to me a year ago to outfit our gym if we could
make it a reality,” added Tenhouse. “He has a passion for integrating CrossFit
into medical and healthcare settings. With this box, we can join Decatur
Memorial Hospital and CrossFit Enhance in quantifying the health improvements
in our members and with our community.”
Information on classes and pricing at CrossFit Enhance KMC is
still being determined. Additional details on CrossFit, Inc. are available at www.crossfit.com and www.crossfitenhance.com.
