Kirby's Smoking Cessation Program

Kirby’s Smoking Cessation Program

We all know smoking is bad for your health, but quitting can be a real struggle. Our Smoking Cessation program addresses the tremendous effort it takes to drop the habit.
We work in conjunction with the American Academy of Family Practice’s Ask & Act Program, the Illinois Department of Public Health Quitline and the American Lung Association to offer our patients educational materials and counseling support to get them through the cessation process and on track to a healthy life!
Kirby Medical Group will not only help you quit smoking, but will also provide support and healthcare during the withdrawal process. No matter how long you’ve been smoking, your health will benefit from quitting:
  1. 20 minutes after quitting your heart rate drops to a normal level.
  2. 12 hours after quitting the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
  3. 2 weeks to 3 months after quitting your risk of having a heart attack begins to decrease.
  4. 1 to 9 months after quitting your coughing and shortness of breath decreases.
  5. 1 year after quitting your added risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker’s.
  6. 5 to 15 years after quitting your risk of having a stroke is reduced to that of a nonsmoker’s and your risk of developing cancer of the mouth, throat or esophagus is half that of a smoker’s.
  7. 10 years after quitting your risk of dying from lung cancer is approximately half that of a smoker’s, your risk of developing bladder cancer is half that of a smoker’s and your chance of developing cervical cancer or cancer of the larynx, kidney or pancreas also decreases.
  8. 15 years after quitting your risk of coronary heart disease is the same as that of a nonsmoker.
